Journal of Traumatic Stress, Vol. 23, No. 1, February 2010, pp. 17–24 ( C_ 2010)
The high rate of deployment-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) seen in military veterans of the conflicts in and around Iraq and Afghanistan distinguishes these current operations from previous conflicts (Okie, 2005). Traumatic brain injury is defined as trauma to the head that results in an alteration or loss of consciousness, or posttraumatic amnesia (Carroll, Cassidy, Holm, Kraus, & Coronado, 2004). Due primarily to new forms of explosive weaponry used in these conflicts, TBI is estimated to have occurred in 12–20% of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans (Hoge, McGurk, Thomas, Cox, Engel, & Castro, 2008; Schneiderman, Braver, & Kang, 2008; Tanielian & Jaycox, 2008).
