Top 10 Military Family Moments of 2011

It’s that time of year when top 10 lists seem to proliferate across nearly every web and news page in the nation, proclaiming everything from the best movies and TV shows to the most memorable photos and celebrities of the year.

Since I find it tough to encapsulate a year’s worth of information into a tidy list, I typically steer away from the concept. However, this was such a momentous year for military families that I decided it was time to hop on the list-making bandwagon.

So, here’s my top 10 most memorable military family moments of 2011. It’s certainly not all-inclusive, but I’m hoping it at least hits the highlights.

10. JR Martinez – Warrior Inspiration. This Army veteran and wounded warrior danced his way to the top spot on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” — and inspired a nation with his strength and resilience along the way. In 2003, Martinez was injured by a roadside bomb in Iraq, suffering severe burns to more than 40 percent of his body. He went on to share his story with audiences nationwide. In 2008, he landed a role as an Iraq war veteran on the ABC soap opera, “All My Children,” which led to his “Dancing with the Stars” appearances this year.

Fayetteville Man Surrenders in Connecticut, Confessed to Murder

According to the police, Alexander Zelaya, of Fayetteville, accused of killing his girlfriend and kidnapping their daughter has surrendered in New Haven. He has confessed to the murder of his girlfriend, Miriam Latisha Reyes at her Fayetteville home on Tuesday.

Zelaya is being held without bond on a first-degree murder charge.

Army Releases November Suicide Data

The number of potential Army suicides went down in November from the month before, according to a Department of Defense press release.

There were seven potential suicides among active-duty soldiers in November; none have been confirmed, and all remain under investigation. In October, there were 17 potential active-duty suicides. Four cases have since been confirmed, while the other 13 remain under investigation.

Among reserve-component soldiers not on active duty, the Army reported eight potential suicides in November; six of those have been confirmed, and the rest remain under investigation. In October, there were 13 potential reserve-component suicides. Four of those have been confirmed as suicide.

Special Forces Soldier from Bragg Charged with Attempting to Bring Explosives onto Airplane

Trey Atwater was arrested Saturday morning after trying to go through a security checkpoint at a Midland International airport, in Texas, with explosives in military-grade wrapping, according to the FBI.

“I can’t imagine why that would seem like a good idea to someone,” said Lt. Col. Tom Bryant, a spokesman for the Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg in a WRAL news report. “I’m sure in the course of the investigation, his reasoning will come out.”

Troops Return Home to Fort Bragg from Iraq

Around 200 members from the 82nd Airborne’s, Second Brigade Combat Team, redeployed late Tuesday night.

The Second Brigade Combat Team was the last unit to leave Baghdad, Iraq. They had been depolyed in support of Operation New Dawn since May. Wecome home Falcons!
