SAMHSA identified Military Families as one of their eight strategic initiatives and began funding for the Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF) Technical Assistance (TA) Center.
In 2010, SAMHSA identified eight strategic initiatives on which to concentrate their resources. Led by Kathryn Power, Director, Center for Mental Health Services, Military Families was one of the eight strategic initiatives. To support this initiative, SAMHSA funded the Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF) Technical Assistance (TA) Center in October 2010. Since its establishment, the TA Center has been assisting “states, territories, and tribes develop effective, responsive behavioral health systems for Service Members, Veterans, and their Families, through public/private collaboration among federal, state, territorial, tribal, and local agencies.” In addition to staffing the Policy Academies, they have organized state-specific technical assistance workshops, smaller themed conferences and webinars, and learning communities.
